UNNGOF welcomes Ms. Margaret Sekaggya to the Board
Following the 19th Annual General Assembly of the Uganda National NGO Forum (UNNGOF), held on 29th July 2021, members unanimously elected Ms. Margaret Sekaggya as the new chairperson of the Forum.
Margaret brings to the UNNGOF exceptional transformative leadership experience which she has gained over several years of leadership in different critical positions.
She holds a Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) (Hon) from Makerere University, a Diploma in Legal Practice, LDC (Makerere), and a Master of Laws degree (LLM) from the University of Zambia. She taught law in various institutions including the Law Development Centre, Uganda. She has worked with the governments of Uganda, Zambia, and the United Nations.
During much of the 1980s, she was based at the United Nations Institute for Namibia, readying Namibia’s institutions for transition into independence. From 1996 to 2009, she was the chairperson for the Uganda Human Rights Commission and has also assisted in the setting up of other National Human Rights Commissions across the African continent.
From 2008 to 2014, she served as the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights Defenders. She has served as a judge of the High Court of Uganda and was a Commissioner with the Uganda Interim Electoral Commission which organized the 1996 elections.
Margaret is the most immediate former NGO representative on the Board of Directors for the National Bureau for NGOs and is the Executive Director of the Human Rights Centre Uganda. The Human Rights Centre Uganda has been a member of UNNGOF since February 2013.
