Statement on the Developments at Court Martial
Kampala – 8th January 2025
The Uganda National NGO Forum expresses concern over recent developments at the Court Martial in Makindye during the trial of Dr. Kiiza Besigye and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale.
We are particularly concerned about the detention and the subsequent nine-month imprisonment sentence given to his legal representative, Eron Kiiza, on charges of contempt of court on January 7, 2025
While we respect the independence of the judiciary and ongoing judicial processes, we recognize that these proceedings have far-reaching implications for the rule of law and the administration of justice in Uganda and therefore implore the Court Martial to uphold the rule of law and ensure a fair judicial process.
We stand in solidarity with the Uganda Law Society and the actions they have undertaken to address this matter.
