The Uganda National NGO Forum Statement on the Ongoing #MarchtoParliament Youth Protests in Uganda
The Uganda National NGO Forum expresses deep concern over the unlawful arrests and subsequent detention of young people who have courageously voiced their dissatisfaction regarding the rampant theft of public resources through peaceful protest.
It is crucial to recognize that the fight against corruption is a collective responsibility of every Ugandan. As the President of the Republic of Uganda has repeatedly mentioned, corruption is a significant impediment to Uganda’s development, and the youth are invaluable allies in this fight to eradicate it.
It is imperative to note that peaceful protests are a legitimate form of citizen expression. The right to peaceful protest is protected under Article 29 of our Constitution. Security forces and all state institutions should always seek to respect and uphold this fundamental right.
We therefore urge all accountability institutions, particularly the Judiciary and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, to exercise judiciousness in handling these cases and order the unconditional release of all those arrested in the process of exercising their rights.
Finally, we commend our young people for their courageous stand against corruption in the face of threats from individuals and security forces. Your recent efforts and actions inspire us all.
For God and our Country.
