TRIAS Launches the Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods Project
With an effort to improve livelihoods of farmers in the West Nile region, the project “Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods” was launched on 22nd March 2023, at Zombo District headquarters by the Resident District Commissioner Lt. Col Alitema Pius.
Through Food and Forest Development (FFD) twinning approach, Nyaravur SACCO and Zombo District Farmers Association (ZODFA) were selected to implement the four-year project (2023-2026). This project seeks to increase the resilience of smallholder agriculture and forestry producers’ livelihoods in Uganda through adoption of climate resilient agricultural and forestry production practices and business models.
In his remarks, Lt. Col Alitema decried the rampant deforestation and urged citizens to plant trees if the district is to recover the weather it had in the past.
Other leaders present at the launch included the District LCV Chairperson, Ms. Rikka Nieminen, the Programmes /Finance Manager for FFD and the Regional Programme Coordinator for Trias East Africa, Ms. Lydia Muchodo.
Ms. Muchodo called upon households to embrace environmentally conscious agricultural practices that are critical for sustainable food production.
For the people of Zombo and neighboring districts, this project is timely as it comes at a time when the effects of climate change are felt in everyday life including agricultural production. With the highly anticipated improvement in sustainable food production, the project was warmly welcomed by residents.
ABOUT FOOD AND FOREST DEVELOPMENT
Food and Forest Development (FFD) is an Agri-agency founded in 2012 by Finnish producer organizations to support agriculture and forest producers’ organizations in developing countries. FFD work in project support includes supporting the organizing, networking and lobbying capacity of agriculture and forest producers’ organizations, reduce poverty by improving rural livelihoods and incomes in value chains. FFD operates in Kenya, Tanzania, Nepal, Vietnam, Honduras and Uganda. FFD collaborated with Trias, an international development organization that focuses on the empowerment of member-based organizations of family farmers to deliver climate resilience and sustainable livelihood project.
